Based in San Francisco, Aura Fischbeck Dance creates performance events which investigate and communicate the bodies intelligence and reflect the complexity of a contemporary human experience. Often incorporating video and text, Aura’s work seeks to examine the intersection of movement, language and culture as a bodily poetics. Called "fierce and expressively pliant" in The San Francisco Bay Guardian and "luscious . . . with a wonderful sense of spontaneity . . ." in the DanceView Times, Aura Fischbeck's choreography has been presented nationally in series, festivals and shared programs since 2001. In 2017 she was an associate artist in residence at the Atlantic center for the Arts with Master Artists Jennifer Monson and Zeena Parkins.
In 2018 their work DUSK, a dance for the time when the light is fading, was nominates for an Izzy. In 2016, AFD was granted a residency at the Shawl-Anderson Dance Center. Aura Fischbeck was also invited to be a Feedback participant with the critically acclaimed Joe Goode Performance Group, and participate in “Wrecking”, a model for re-imagining dance, as facilitated by Funsch Dance Experience. Established in 2008, Aura Fischbeck Dance has performed at many Bay area venues including the Joe Goode Annex, Z Space, CounterPULSE, ODC, the Garage Artspace, the Subterranean Arthouse, in Union Square, Jessie Square, The Jon Sim’s Center, The Shotwell Studios and Venue 9. Her work has been presented in Philadelphia at the Meetinghouse Theater and the historic Christ Church Community House, in Colorado at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, The Packing House Center for the Arts, and Work|Space (Denver), and the Headwaters Theater (Portland, OR). Aura has been in residence at the Garage Artspace, the Shotwell Studios, the Subterranean Arthouse (Berkeley), Work|Space (Denver), with the Group Motion Dance Company (Philadelphia) and at the Headwaters Theater (Portland), and has received numerous grants from the Zellerbach Family Foundation, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. Aura Fischbeck Dance is fiscally sponsored by Dancers' Group.
A Philadelphia native, Aura Fischbeck received her earliest dance training from her mother Brigitta Herrmann, a student of Mary Wigman and cofounder of Group Motion Dance Company, and her father Manfred Fischbeck, cofounder and current artistic director of Group Motion Dance Company. In addition to choreographing and performing in her own company Aura has been a collaborator and performer in the work of many esteemed artists including Deborah Hay (as part of Ms. Hay’s Solo Performance Commissioning Project, 2012), Susan Rethorst, Christy Funsch/Funsch Dance Experience, Deborah Karp Dance Project, Daria Kaufman, Chris Black, Kathleen Hermesdorf, The Riley Project, Krista DeNio, Christine Cali, Joe Landini, Barbara Dilley, Wendell Beavers, Cara Reeser, and Brigitta Herrmann. Aura has taught community classes and workshops locally at Kunst-Stoff Arts, the Shotwell Studios, and the Subterranean Arthouse, and has been a guest teacher at the Naropa University (CO), San Francisco City College, the Packing House Center for the Arts (CO), and the Headwaters Theater (Portland, OR). She holds a B.A. in dance and poetry from the Naropa University and an MFA from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.
